Eight of us – Liz, Mara, Emily, Clare, Jon, Robyn, Rianna, myself – went to Bethnal Green Weightlifting Club for our first weightlifting session last week. Our coach was Giles Greenwood – Commonwealth gold medal winner and British record holder. Giles is a natural teacher who, despite all his achievements, manages to retain his enthusiasm even when working with complete beginners like us.
Having gone through basic safety procedures, Giles started by taking us through the component parts of the lift that we were learning that day – the snatch. My first thought was “Help, the bar alone feels pretty heavy” (the men’s bar is 20kg ; the women’s bar 15kg). The second thought was “ This I far more technical than I realised”.
The hour and a half session flew by and by the end we were putting the whole lift together and seeing how much we could lift. This blog is committed to complete honesty when describing my (frequent) sporting humiliations. Even so, I can’t bring myself to admit how little I could lift. Let’s just say that I am looking forward to doing better at our next session on Jan 6th when we learn the clean and jerk.
There will be a video to follow after my second session too – so you’ve got lots to look forward to. In the meantime, if my latest Olympic sport attempt has interested you, please do donate here: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/DansGoldChallenge
