Guilty pleasures. We’ve all got them. Things we love but might think twice about admitting to the general public.
One of mine is cover bands. Not the kind of the covers you see on X Factor but real bands with a guitar, a bass and a set of drums. Playing classic rock tracks so loud that you can belt out the chorus without fear of anyone hearing your excruciatingly tuneless vocals.
Even more shamefacedly, I quite like cider. Not proper man cider that’s been fermented in a ram’s gut in deepest, darkest Somerset. But sweet fizzy cider. Not the whole time, of course. Just sometimes as a change from beer and wine, you understand.
As luck would have it there’s a bar in Lanzarote, not far from where we were staying, that serves up ‘Sweet Home Alabama’, ‘Sweet Child O’ Mine’, and ‘Sweet Caroline’ with sweet Magners. And so it was that I wasn’t feeling all that lively when Sienna bounced into our room at 8 a.m. in the morning. Which was 7 a.m. really as the clocks had uncharitably moved forward an hour in the short time that had elapsed since we’d crashed into bed.
But, as ever, there’s nothing like fresh air, blue skies and a bit of a run to clear the head. Sienna and I headed west towards Playa Blanca while Liz and Freya went east. We ran along the coastline for 5 kms at a pretty good pace before turning back. I’d tell you a little more about our pace except that my Garmin has – yet again – lost the run data. Grrr. (If anyone from Garmin is reading this, it’s time to sponsor me and give me a new watch!)
We slowed down a bit for kilometres 6 – 9 before speeding up for the final kilometre. My time was 55 minutes and 12 seconds and Sienna’s probably a second or two faster. A new PB for her by about 2 ½ minutes.
That’s about it except to tell you that I recently received an email from Guilty Pleasures.co.uk (promoting their upcoming parties at Koko in Camden). I’ve never had an email from them before and it arrived exactly as I was finishing writing this blog. Coincidence or targeted marketing being taken to a new level? Spooky either way..
